You’re probably here, because the Instagram widget that is included on one of our themes stopped working. If that is the case, for starters we’re really sorry about that! The good news is that this small article will show you how to quickly fix that.
Some days ago Instagram made some changes to their platform. Now we need to login with the user account to get the images from their feed. This means that the page element I had on my themes stopped working and there’s no point in maintaining it. Why? Because the real advantage of this element was actually to skip the authentication part. If we can’t workaround that part it is better to use a dedicated plugin for this feature.
The plugin that I’m recommending for this feature is Smash Balloon Social Photo Feed.
There’s a premium version, but if you were happy with the theme Instagram element, then the free version of this plugin is more than enough (it has already much more options). Plus, you will be able to have the exact same layout as you had before.
There are various ways to add the content to a page, but if you want to mimic quickly the 2 rows with 6 columns that I have on multiple demos, please add the shortcode below to any page:
Workaround on asking for Instagram login info
One thing that maybe be annoying is that he plugin has a button “Connect to your Instagram account”. What happens very often is that you are doing this to a client and you aren’t logged in with his account on Instagram.
A possible solution would be asking for the client Instagram login details, but I don’t really think this is a “solution”. It is actually really annoying! As an alternative, you could also ask the client to login on WordPress and take care of that. This is a better solution, but still not my favorite.
So, how can we workaround this? Luckily the plugin has the option “Manually Connect to an Instagram account” and in this case all you have to do is to enter an access token. To get this access toke please ask your client go here https://instagram.pixelunion.net/ and click on “Generate Access Token”.
As always, if you have any feedback on this tutorial or got stuck somewhere, please send me a message using the contact form below. I would love to hear from you.
